A Little HVAC Maintenance, Like a Little TLC, Keeps Your Ductless Heat Pump Running Smoothly
Ductless mini-split heat pumps are a marvel of technology and can run for years with minimal maintenance – but it still needs a little care and attention over the course of a year. Basic HVAC maintenance will ensure it keeps operating at max efficiency, delivering the lowest energy use, and also help guarantee you keep your warranty protections.
These are some of the most important aspects of HVAC maintenance you should perform on your ductless heat pump.
1. Keep the air filter clean
Like all HVAC systems, your ductless heat pump relies on an air filter to keep the air clean, and that filter will need to be cleaned every 1-2 months. It may also have to be periodically replaced, depending on how dirty it gets, but only around once a year. This is something you can easily do yourself; the filter is simple to get at and replacements can be found in most home improvement stores.
2. Clean the drain pan
There’s a drain pan beneath the evaporator coil, catching any condensation that may form and drip off of it. There should never be enough water that it overflows (if this happens, call for repairs asap!) but it can leave nasty dirt and gunk at the bottom of the pan. Just give it a quick clean once or twice a year.
3. Keep the outdoor unit free of debris
The outdoor unit is where the heat exchange happens, and it relies on having a lot of ventilation to keep the air flowing properly. However, being located outside, it’s easy for the fans and vents of the outdoor unit to get covered by dirt, fallen leaves, and other debris. Keep an eye on it, and clean off the exterior whenever it has too much junk.
Also, make sure there aren’t any bushes, shrubs, etc., growing too close. The outdoor unit should always have at least a few feet of clearance between it and nearby items.
4. Call for yearly professional maintenance
There are many aspects of HVAC maintenance – such as checking coolant levels or fixing electrical problems – which you should not attempt on your own. It’s a good idea to call HVAC service pros once a year to check your system.
